The Ethiopian government has introduced an online travel authorization –known as Ethiopia’s eVisa system– for nationals of all countries with the exception of Kenya and Djibouti, whose nationals are not required to have a visa for entering the country.
The new system came into effect in June 2018 to facilitate the immigration process and enhance national border security. The Ethiopia eVisa is easy to obtain online without any need for visiting an Ethiopian representation in the Philippines.
Filipino and other nationals who are traveling to Ethiopia on an eVisa are required to enter the country through the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. They are not permitted to enter Ethiopia from any other ports of entry.
What Visa Do I Need to Visit Ethiopia From the Philippines?
All citizens of the Philippines who wish to visit Ethiopia are required to obtain a visa prior to their travel. There are two types of Ethiopia visas for Filipino nationals depending on the purpose of their travel:
Tourist eVisas to enter Ethiopia from the Philippines
Filipino passport holders can apply for a tourist visa if they are traveling to Ethiopia for tourism, leisure, or a family visit. These visas are valid for either 30 days or 90 days. In both cases, the visa’s validity comes into effect on the intended date of entry into Ethiopia and not on the date of the eVisa issuance.
Filipino nationals should also know the tourist eVisa is a single-entry travel document. This means that it can only be used to enter Ethiopia once within the validity period of the visa.
However, there are no limits on the number of times travelers can apply for a new Ethiopia visa from the Philippines per year.
Ethiopia’s business visas available for Filipinos
For visits involving any paid or voluntary work, travelers from the Philippines need to obtain an Ethiopian business visa.
Various types of business visas are designed for different purposes: NGO work visas, government institutions short task visas, international organizations/embassies work visas, private firm visas, journalist visas, and so forth.
The business visa can be obtained either online or in-person at the consulate of Ethiopia in Manila.
What Documents Do Filipino Nationals Need to Get an Ethiopian Visa?
In order to obtain an Ethiopia tourist visa for Filipino citizens, travelers from the Philippines need to make sure they have the following documents ready:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months with two or more blank pages left
- A valid debit card or credit card that will be used for online payment of the eVisa fee
- An active email address for all correspondence regarding the visa and receiving the visa approval
Once their eVisa has been approved, candidates of the Philippines will be asked to send in the following additional documentation:
- A copy of the biographical page of the passport
- A recent passport-style color photo
Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Filipino travelers will be asked to present:
- A printed copy of the Ethiopia visa for the Philippines citizens
- A photocopy of the passport
Another Ethiopia visa requirement for Filipinos that travelers need to meet before entering the country is making sure they hold a yellow fever certificate if they visited or transited through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.
It is the Filipinos’ responsibility to know all the Ethiopian eVisa requirements involved during the application process and before entering the country.
Ethiopia eVisa Processing Times for Filipinos
The process of obtaining an eVisa for Ethiopia is very fast. Electronic travel authorizations are usually approved within 1 to 3 business days counting from the date of online application. If all the provided information is accurate, in most cases, eVisas get approved within 24 hours.
In order to account for any delays, travelers from the Philippines are advised to submit the application at least 3 days before their date of travel.
How Can Travelers From the Philippines Apply for an Ethiopian Visa?
The online Ethiopia visa application for the Philippines is a simple process that can be completed in just a few minutes on a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
After accurately entering the required personal and passport details on the application form, candidates are asked several health- and security-related questions. They also need to indicate whether they would like to obtain a 30-day visa or a 90-day visa for their stay in Ethiopia.
It is important to note that if any details provided in the application form are incorrect, visa approval may be delayed and even denied.
The Filipino applicant can then proceed to pay the eVisa processing fee online using a debit or credit card. All the major international cards are accepted as valid payment methods.
After the application has been submitted, travelers will get an email confirmation to the address they provided in the application form. They will also receive their eVisa via email.
The travel authorization must be printed out and presented along with the passport to the immigration officer at the Ethiopian port of entry.
Nationals of the Philippines must avoid overstaying the Ethiopian eVisa since this can have serious consequences.
