Travelers looking to travel to Ethiopia must hold a valid visa to enter the country. As of June 1, 2018, citizens of foreign countries are eligible for the Ethiopia eVisa. This is a new online process meant to streamline the immigration process of visiting tourists while enhancing national border security. Chinese citizens can easily obtain their Ethiopia eVisa through an online application.
The only two exceptions to the visa requirement are Kenya and Djibouti. Citizens of Kenya can enter Ethiopia without a visa for up to one year while citizens of Djibouti can do so for up to three months. All other citizens need to request a visa before entering Ethiopia.
Should Chinese Citizens Apply for a Ethiopia eVisa?
Yes, Chinese citizens need a visa in order to enter Ethiopia. Tourist visas are typically single entry only and are available for a 30 or 90-day stay.
Chinese citizens have two options for obtaining a visa for Ethiopia: eVisa and visa on arrival.
However, travelers are encouraged to submit a visa application online to ensure they are eligible to enter the country prior to departure. The online process also allows travelers to be notified of the status of their visa ahead of their travel and avoid any inconveniences upon arrival.
A visa on arrival can require waiting in line at border entry points upon arrival. Chinese travelers should make sure to bring all the necessary documents with them to avoid being denied entry to the country.
On the other hand, the eVisa allows Chinese travelers to skip these lines since the process can be done entirely online.
*Note: travelers who possess an eVisa must enter Ethiopia via Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The online visa doesn’t allow tourists to enter the country through any other ports.

It is also possible to request an extension before the visa expires. To do so, travelers need to go in person to the Head Office of The Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs in Addis Ababa. The visa can be extended for up to 30 days and in order to obtain the extension Chinese citizens need to still meet all the Ethiopia online visa requirements.
Travelers should remember that staying in the country beyond the validity of the visa can lead to fines and legal penalties.
Chinese visitors who have been traveling to countries with risk of yellow fever should get the vaccination. The proof of yellow fever vaccination is required also for previous transit in an airport located in a country with risk of yellow fever for more than 12 hours.
